New Policy For Engineering Program This Year

In this academic year, students will find some new changes in the admission process of engineering colleges in Gujarat. Until now, students had been following the upgradation structure but from this year, they will have to follow a reallocation policy. As per the new policy, a candidate who has taken admission in a particular branch but now wants to opt for another branch would need to submit his/her previous seat to get an admission in the desired engineering branch. Mr. MN Patel, Principal of LD Engineering College and head of the admission committee, said, “It is not going to affect the career of the students much. The only difference is that first they had the option of holding on to their earlier branch, but now they will get a chance to reshuffle depending on the availability of the college and the branch that they have requested for.”

Mechanical Engineering Gains Popularity Among Engineering Aspirants

The Central Admission Committee has declared that more & more engineering aspirants are opting for mechanical engineering over other engineering streams. The reason behind the increasing popularity of mechanical engineering as a career option is its impeccable placement record in the last two years. In 2009, companies selected 70 students of mechanical engineering stream from LD Engineering Institute followed by Electrical and Electronics & Communications engineering streams. This year also 51 mechanical engineers have been placed in reputed companies and 21 each from EC and Electrical. Prof KB Bhoyania, Placement officer at LD Engineering College, said, “It has been the trend since the last two years that the highest placement goes to students having taken up mechanical engineering."

Common Engineering Entrance Test Not Welcomed By IITs

The Indian Institutes of Technology have rejected the idea of selecting the candidates through a Common Engineering Entrance Test for all engineering colleges. HRD ministry-appointed committee said in its report, “Scores in a well-designed National Aptitude Test should be used to capture parameters of interest such as raw intelligence, aptitude, general awareness, comprehension and written communication skills. NAT should not require extensive preparation and coaching. The questions should be designed in such a way that it would not require inputs beyond plus 2 level.” To make the exam process more friendly for students, the committee has proposed to make NAT an online test conducted throughout the year.
