A charge ‘q’is placed at the centre of the line joining two equal charges Q.The system of 3 charges will be in equilibrium, if ‘q’is equal to;

a)-Q/2

b)-Q/4

c) Q/2

d) Q/4

The answer is (b)  – Q / 4

For the three charges to be in equilibrium, the net force must be zero. i.e, considering the net force on any one of Q (since q will be in equilibrium for any value of q when placed at the midpoint)
